An IL not-for-profit corporation/501(c)(3) charitable foundation founded in 2004, Team Spirit Institute's (TSI) premier program - which has been listed on UGive.org since Stevenson High School began its association with UGive - trains teens on how to visit healthcare patients (long-term and rehab). Known as Lifting the Human Spirit by Visiting the Sick (LHSVS), since its inception in 2007, LHSVS has trained more than 350 youth on how to visit the sick. LHSVS was launched through the generosity of a grant from the Washington Square Healthcare Foundation. After attending an intensive three-hour training-orientation session, LHSVS Teen Volunteers are invited to attend regular (approx. monthly) visiting sessions at the Symphony of Buffalo Grove - a state-of-the-art rehab and nursing center in Buffalo Grove, IL. Each visiting session is highlighted by the participation of a sports figure (professional athletes [retired & active], journalists, Northwestern University coaches and student-athletes, etc). At each visiting session, the Celebrity Sports Star/CSS (see website's photo gallery) makes a short presentation about their career and life lessons learned from it, and then leads the youth in visiting healthcare patients. The CSS takes photos with youth and healthcare patients and gives autographs. Many LHSVS alumni have cited LHSVS as an important community service program on their college/graduate school applications. A significant number of alumni have also pursued healthcare professions (medicine, nursing, physical/occupational/speech therapy, etc). LHSVS has also lifted the spirits of the participating healthcare patients (documented empirically and anecdotally), and has been an "eye-opening" experience for many of our (volunteer) Celebrity Sports Stars.
