Join NOAA scientists in studying some of Hawaii's most important deep-water fish species by reviewing underwater images captured by specialized cameras placed on the ocean floor. Your task will be to identify and count fish appearing in the images, helping researchers understand how many fish are living in Hawaiian waters and how their populations change over time.
Today, scientists rely on information from both commercial fishing and research surveys to estimate fish populations. By helping classify these underwater images, you'll provide valuable data that improves the accuracy of these estimates while also helping train artificial intelligence to recognize fish automatically. This will allow scientists to analyze millions of images much more quickly than would otherwise be possible.
Your contributions will support sustainable fisheries management, helping ensure that these culturally and economically important fish remain healthy for future generations. The data you help collect will be used by NOAA researchers to make science-based recommendations that protect Hawaii's marine ecosystems while supporting responsible recreational and commercial fishing.
