  • Marine iguanas live only on the Galápagos Islands and are found nowhere else on Earth. These remarkable reptiles are the world's only sea-going lizards, but their populations are threatened by climate change, pollution, invasive predators, and habitat loss. Scientists need accurate population counts to help protect them, but many colonies are located in remote areas that are difficult to reach.

In this project, you'll examine drone photographs of the Galápagos Islands and help identify and count marine iguanas. Your observations will help researchers estimate where these endangered animals live and how many remain in the wild.

Every image you classify contributes to important conservation research. By helping scientists build the first comprehensive picture of marine iguana populations, you'll support efforts to protect this unique species and preserve one of the world's most extraordinary ecosystems for future generations.
