Penguins are important indicators of the health of our oceans, but many species are threatened by climate change, changing sea ice, pollution, predators, and competition with fisheries. To better understand and protect these birds, scientists have placed cameras throughout Antarctica and the Southern Ocean to capture thousands of images of penguin colonies.
In this project, you'll examine photographs from these remote cameras and identify adult penguins, chicks, eggs, and other animals that appear in the images. Your observations help researchers track breeding success, population changes, and threats facing penguin colonies.
Every image you classify helps scientists process far more data than they could on their own. Your contributions support conservation research, improve artificial intelligence tools used to analyze wildlife images, and provide information that helps guide efforts to protect penguins and their fragile Antarctic habitat.
