SUMMARY
Reflection
From this experience, I learned that oftentimes it’s not large scale projects that make a difference, but a compounding effort of small, quality of life changes that make my community a safer place to live. Many people in my neighborhood speed, and since both the speed limit and school zone signs are cleaner now, I have noticed a downturn in the incidence of speeding around the school specifically, making it a safer place.
Project Impact
York elementary school has 455 students as of 2025, and many of those students (not all) walk to school from my neighborhood, and many others drive as well. By maintaining the visibility of the street signs, I was able to make the trip to school just a little bit safer for these kids, because there have been incidents in the past of people speeding and hitting poles or other objects in my neighborhood. Additionally, this helped the people in my neighborhood who live around the school as well, since now the roads are marginally safer. This group of people is likely between 50-75 people.
PROJECTS TASKS

Page Week
10.00 hours participating in an awareness event | Curiosity
During this week we learned all about the ins and outs of state government, including job shadowing, listening to speakers, and giving a policy presentation. I was able to create strong connections with both the pages in my group and the government officials that I worked closely with during the week.

Project Planning
4.00 hours leading an initiative | Compassion
This project was for the purpose of making the school environment near a local school safer for all the elementary schoolers. The road signs in my neighborhood were really dirty and not well taken care of, especially the ones detailing that it was a school zone and speed limits. I decided to map out the entirety of the area around my neighborhood to see which signs needed to be cleaned, made a route to have the most efficient cleaning method, and planned which ones were the highest priority. I also went to get all of the cleaning supplies that I needed, as well as prepping them.

Street Sign Cleaning
4.00 hours leading an initiative | Compassion
During the actual project, I realized that the route I planned was slightly unoptimized, so I decided to take a slightly different route, that way I could do it entirely on foot. The equipment I used was a ladder, bucket of soapy water, rags, and magic erasers. By the end of the time I had spent, all of the street signs in a 1000 foot radius of York elementary school were completely visible and clean, making it a safer environment.

Project Outcomes & Reflection
1.00 hour leading an initiative | Compassion
After the project, all of the street signs near the elementary school by my house were completely visible and clean, and will not need to be cleaned again hopefully for years. I did it during one of the coldest days of the year, so unfortunately I didn’t get to do as much as I had initially hoped (my entire neighborhood) but I was able to get done everything that needed to be done. After I was done, I was approached by a neighbor telling me that it was not only helpful for the school, but it made it safer for everyone since many cars use my neighborhood as a through-street, so having visible street signs benefited not only the school but also my neighbors safety as well, considering my neighborhood has a lot of pedestrians.
