Since its inception January, 2013, My Sister's Keeper (MSK ) has forged partnerships with area schools, churches, businesses, organizations and individuals to provide one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring, peer mentoring, school-based mentoring, academic enrichment, life skills training, field trips, community service projects, career exploration, internships, summer youth employment, life-coaching and counseling services for over 1000 under-served youth ages 7-24. MSK is listed with the national registry for mentoring organizations and employs national best practices as established by MENTOR (see www.mentoring.org).
MSK has successfully integrated evidence-based curriculums, including Botvin Life Skills Training and The 40-Developmental Assets, as well as the newly developed pilot study Keep Her: The 7 P's of Healthy Youth Development. Program participants are also receiving instruction in developmental topics, such as Self-Esteem Building, Self-Efficacy, Etiquette, Entrepreneurship, Goal Setting, Financial Literacy, Public Speaking, Writing 101, Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, Test Taking Skills & SAT Prep, College Prep, Anger & Emotional Management, Problem Solving, Conflict Resolution, Peer Pressure, Anti-Bullying, Decision Making, Relationship Building, Substance Abuse Prevention, and Self-Care. This program content is covered in our weekly school-based sessions at Highland Park Renaissance Academy and George Washington Carver Academy. MSK monthly group mentoring sessions, workshops, and activities are held every second Saturday of the month at 12noon at our offices.
In addition to monthly meetings, mentees are paired with a caring and responsible adult mentor who has committed to a minimum of 4 hours per month face to face time or one-on-one mentoring. Individual counseling services and goal-oriented life coaching are made available to our young ladies Tuesday through Thursday evenings. MSK also hosts an annual Six-Week Summer Program of workshops, group discussions, exercises, activities, and outings with a culminating college and cultural out-of-state trip. This year our girls experienced Fisk and Tennessee State Universities, along with several historical sites in the Nashville and Memphis, TN area. Last year, they spent the day at Spelman and Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA. The previous summer, we traveled to Washington, D.C. where MSK toured the White House and other historical landmarks, and visited the campus of Howard University. Program participants have also visited Chicago, Six Flags, Cedar Point, the African American, Detroit Historical, Holocaust Memorial and Motown Museums, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Zoo, Wiards Orchard, CJ Barrymore, Sky Zone Trampoline Park, and they have taken an Underground Railroad Tour. We look forward to eventual overseas travel.
