History
Heart of West Michigan United Way was originally founded in 1917 as a Community Chest. Today we are part of a network of more than 1,300 United Ways across the nation, each of which is autonomous and independently governed by its own, local Board of Directors.
As a long-time community leader, we convene and collaborate with other organizations throughout West Michigan to advance the common good, direct change, and create opportunities for a good life for all who live and work here.
Diversity
We have a foundation in the firm belief that all individuals should be treated with dignity and respect. We are proud to be the first nonprofit organization to receive the highest level of assessment and credentialing from Partners for a Racism-Free Community.
We believe in the strength of diversity and the inherent worth of all individuals. We support this belief through policies, employment practices, program funding, volunteer recruitment, and partnerships with other diversity-driven organizations.
In all of our policies, practices, programs, business and community relationships, Heart of West Michigan United Way seeks to be racism and discrimination-free, whereby all persons -- regardless of skin color, religion, creed, age, sex, national origin or ancestry, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation, or status as a qualified disabled or handicapped individual -- feel welcomed and wanted in all places and treat others the same way. United Way will seek volunteers and personnel who reflect and acknowledge the importance and value of diversity in our community.
