SUMMARY
Reflection
I had no idea what kind of effect food waste had on our world. By watching the video and gathering facts, I was astonished by how much an average American family contributes to this problem. It then sparked my mind to not only spread awareness about this topic and suggest simple solutions, but help start a community compost based at the local library! This is obviously no small thing (especially with the Teen advisor being a bit skeptical of how it would work) and had to be pushed for... but it was definitely worth it! I'm so excited to be part of starting something like this and I'm super pumped to see our community come together and fight for change.
Project Impact
Posts got 900 views on both personal and non-profit accounts. Also spent a few hours pushing for the compost and doing research to make it happen. Have not implemented it yet, but have great hopes.
PROJECTS TASKS
Gather Food Waste Facts
2.00 hours leading an initiative | Curiosity
Learned about food waste, the United States waste patterns (aka the US wasting 40% of the food they eat and approx 1 pound per person daily), and learned about different ways we can reuse food for different organisms with different needs rather than throwing it away. The following are the resources I used to learn about the problem (also attached in description of activity) and I found it really interesting!
Socialize the Message

Made 5 Instagram posts describing food waste.
Speak Truth to Power
4.00 hours leading an initiative | Compassion
Talked to a friend and an adult running the Teen section at my local library about starting a local compost program based at the library. We will also inform the public about food waste and the effects and prevention methods. Are planning it right now, and will be implementing it in Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 hopefully! Wanting it to look something like the attached picture, in a garden (not the greenhouse).
