SUMMARY
Reflection
Leading this composting project taught me that small environmental actions can create lasting change. From writing the proposal to applying Effective Microorganisms at the garden, I learned how to turn a basic idea into a real-world solution. I had to plan, collaborate, and adjust things along the way, like when ratios of rice water EM and water needed to be recalculated or when weather affected the work. I learned how to lead by example, and I saw how science, sustainability, and teamwork can come together to support community health. Most importantly, I learned that clear communication, good planning, and community involvement are the keys to a successful project.
Project Impact
I improved composting at The SPOT community garden in Wilson, NC, by applying Effective Microorganisms (EM) to three key areas: compost bins, leaves, and soil. I spent over 10 hours independently planning, preparing, and applying EM treatments to improve composting efficiency. I treated:
3 compost bins using ~15 liters of EM solution
4 leaf piles with ~10 liters of EM mix
~150 sq ft of soil with a custom EM blend
This method will help reduce organic waste and improve food production for over 20 families who benefit from the garden. I also documented the process so it can be repeated in other communities. I plan to use this same approach to support composting efforts at a community garden in Greenville, NC.
PROJECTS TASKS

Grant + Partner Proposal
3.00 hours leading a program | Compassion
Successfully secured a grant for the Zero Hunger Zero Waste Council to fund initiatives aimed at reducing food waste and addressing hunger. Assisted in crafting a strong proposal, demonstrating the impact of sustainable solutions in the community. Helped direct funding toward programs that promote food recovery and redistribution.

Project Experience+Impact
5.00 hours leading a program | Compassion
I led a composting project at The SPOT community garden in Wilson, NC to support a more sustainable and healthy growing environment. I met with the garden manager and worked with another volunteer to apply Effective Microorganisms (EM) to the compost, soil, and leaves. We used specific EM-to-water ratios: 10–20 ml per liter for compost, 1 ml per liter for leaves, and 2 ml per liter for soil. This helped speed up decomposition, improve soil health, and reduce waste naturally.
We documented the process with photos and learned how small actions can make a big environmental impact. I enjoyed working as a team and using science to support the garden. This project can be easily repeated in other communities with similar setups. I am looking forward to work with community garden in Greenville, NC to help their garden too!

Role + Reflection
1.00 hour leading a program | Compassion
Serving as a Youth Advisory Council member helped me grow as a leader and problem-solver. Creating a composting project from scratch taught me how to plan, adapt, and take initiative in a real-world setting. I enjoyed learning about sustainability, teamwork, and environmental solutions that can be applied in other communities. This role strengthened my communication, organization, and leadership skills. It also gave me confidence to lead future projects that create real impact.
